The temperature at nigh reached 89 today, it is hot and humid and the rain comes and goes like crazy. The Sun is hidden behind patchy low-lying clouds that somehow make the atmosphere on the island bearable. Sri Lanka is a war-torn third world country, seeking for its place in the modern world.
Outside Colombo, the busy capital, the island is sleepy and rural at best. A mosaic of cultures and religions, Sri Lankan are mostly Buddhists though many are Hindu, Muslim, Christian and even Sikhs. The daily lives of Sri Lankan are simple and devoted to work and family life. Their food is spicy and cricket is the national religion.
Though the mood is relaxed and third-world-esque, there seems to be a tension among the inhabitants, constant reminders of the war are everywhere, in the form of checkpoints, the occasional army barrack, or the soldiers patrolling the streets. The country's roads and public places are closely monitored by STF (Special Task Force) soldiers with AK47s and Scorpion handguns. In wealthy areas, up to 10 guards are often committed to a little section, and the many hotspots of the city are closely monitored and checked. Entire busses are emptied almost every other kilometer to ensure the safety of the nation. But the enemy is nowhere to be seen, he lives in newspaper articles, bomb threats, explosions and in the hardworking Tamil ethnic group. Supposedly, the north and east of the island are blockaded from the world by this civil war which will soon be 30 years old.
